Writing Update

I’ve just finished proofreading 100 Gates, a fantasy novel set mainly in Japan, and am working on the sales page for the book. To do that, I’ve uploaded it to Amazon as a pre-order set for May 25th, but will likely publish sooner. The book is a mix of urban fantasy, folklore, and straight up fantasy. I started writing it as an outline for a graphic novel and it kept growing into what amounts to my longest standalone novel to date, weighing in at over 175,000 words. That’s not a record (except for me), but feels long after you’ve read it for the tenth time. Here are the blurb and cover (as of now).

Matt Minamoto never gave his Japanese surname a second thought. Why would he? His great-grandfather left Japan in 1923, and the last vestige of the old country is the sword he brought with him. All of that changes when a tragic accident leaves Matt’s body broken and his heart shattered.

​He finds himself with a one-way ticket to Japan, to a remote village named Kenoshiro, and to a house without electricity or plumbing. In a land famous for technological innovation, it’s as if he stepped back in time. The villagers are too friendly, too interested, and have too many expectations he can’t meet.

He counts the days until his eighteenth birthday when he can return to America, but just surviving to adulthood looks unlikely. Matt gets an education about his heritage he didn’t want. He learns real monsters aren’t cute or pocket-sized, lots of things bump in the night, and sometimes the sweetest smile masks a mouthful of long, sharp teeth.

100 Gates mixes mythology with urban legend and blends them to create gritty, supernatural fantasy.
